We are such a huge fan!

of fans that is,  Have them in all the rooms and they run all year round.  We flip them to spin the other day in the winter to move the hot air around, short story, we love fans.

Well the fan in M's room started making a grinding noise off and on when it was spinning and it bothered him, but of course he couldnt sleep without a fan.

I took the fan apart and tried to see if I could find anything that might be causing it and no luck.

But then again the fan is like 16 years old, so i think it has had a good life.  Off to the Blue Box we go and we bought a new fan.

Now, just a little background, I have installed countless fans in my life.  Swapped out lights for fans, old fans for new fans, etc.  I can officially be considered at the level of "EXPERT" when it comes to fans.

D picked out the fan she liked and convinced M to like it also (by buying a baseball chain puller for it) in the basket and off we go.  What was interesting, was on the box it says "FIVE MINUTE FAN"

Just to be clear, we did not purchase the fan because of this, just noticed that the box said this.

Upon returning home I took all the old brackets off the ceiling, made sure all the tools I needed were upstairs and I was ready to go....

watch start  (no, not really, but lets pretend)

Took the fan out of the box,  box says  "90% pre-assembled"  Its no more assembled than most other fans I have installed.

Took all the mounting hardware out and looked at it.  They have a flat plate that goes on the ceiling with hooks on one end,  they expect you to take the trim ring and get it put on the fan extension and then hook the trim ring on the bracket to suspend it from the ceiling while you wire it.   This is not really something that takes more time than the other way to do it, but this is really stupid.  I much prefer the bracket that bolts to the box than you hang the ball on, wire it, then push the trim rings up.  While I was wiring and such the fan was hanging at an awkward angle and it made it harder than it needs to be, but in the end, its stupid.

Just to be clear, dumb, stupid, etc

OK, I think I'm over that now....  Actually I'm not

so once its wired and everything, you have to lift up the trim ring, with all the weight of the fan, and line up the holes in the side to get screws in,  So lets see, one hand to push up the trim ring, one hand to steady the fan, one hand to hole the screw, one hand to hold, the screwdriver, one hand to hold the flashlight, one hand to rub my face where I have smacked myself in the head with the fan as I moved it, and six eyes to try and see, in the dark, using the flashlight, where I have to hold it in order to get the screw to line up.  Did I mention this was stupid?

I did manage to get the fan bolted up,

the extra trim rin this one has on the other trim ring,  The blades put on the fan (which was the only thing that might "save some time"  they used these little rubber things to clip the fan blades onto as opposed to bolts.  I would prefer bolts...  The light kit bolted on, the globes put on the light, the bulbs put in the lights and the baseball puller hanging from the fan and VOILA

The fan is up, it works well, etc.  But the LONG and not so short of it, this was no where near a 5 minute fan install.....

and in the end, are we really so busy in life that we only have 5 minutes to install a fan?  Is this a time period in our life that we need to regulate?

How about we work on a 5 minute commute to work and I will use the other hour and 25 minutes I will save each day and use that to install a fan,  can we do that!
