Dewalt DC730 - update and review

As I mentioned in a earlier post, I went out and purchased (2) Dewalt DC730 1/2" drills to take out of town with me on a job.  I have also ended up using them extensively on a job in town that I just completed.

Let me preface this by making clear what I was using them for.  Both jobs involved inserting and removing hundreds of 10-32 machine screws from threaded holes.  The Torque settings on the drill are very important to me as the machine screws need to go in tight to hold the product, but yet I need to be able to take them out easily also.  Also the speed of the drill is important because when you are inserting or removing a lot of these the slower the drill is the longer the time.

Now, the first reason I chose this drill is because of the batteries.  I was traveling out of town for the first job and shipping my tools there via air service and you cannot ship lithium ion batteries via air service without a lot of hassle.  Also this drill was nice because it was a compact drill which makes a big difference after using the drill all day long.

The drill is well built and runs fast in the high gear.  The clutch settings are great in that they do not torque to hard down on the screw and if I put a screw in with the clutch set on #2, I can remove it with the clutch set on #2.  Many drills these days will not do that.  It was lightweight, the batteries had plenty of power and charged up quickly when I needed them to.  I was quite pleased with the purchase

On another note I can tell you not to purchase porter cable bit sets.  I bought a couple of sets to go with me as they always seem to grow legs and walk away since I am working around a lot of other people.  One set I bought came with all #1 philips bits, even though the labels said otherwise.  The other unit was just so badly packaged that it was a mess trying to find anything in the little box it came in.  I will not be making the mistake of buying any porter cable bit sets again
