Finally the time came for a little time away in the woods and some time to hunt.
It was warmer than normal for this part of Texas, and the time of year. There had also been no measurable rainfall since August, but after checking feeders and such in the morning, we headed out mid afternoon to sit and see what we saw.
We saw a few deer that day, including a doe who was pretty good size, and while doe season was still open that day, I told myself that I didnt need to get greedy on day 1, this was a good area and we would see plenty more.
Boy, was I wrong about that. Should have harvested that doe right then and called it done... But hindsight being 20/20 and all.
Next few days we sat in the stand and had very few deer encounters and they were short and very few deer. With the weather and no rain, the food plot had not grown in and there just wasnt anything to bring them to where we needed them.
Being the superstitious baseball fans we are, we tried everything to change our luck. who went up the stairs first, who sat on what side, who sat in what chair. Everything, none of that made any difference.
This is of course is the time you say, well look at the trail cams you have out, when were they coming by and eating and etc.
This is the time I say, what trail cams....
Second to the last day we were there, I threw up my hands in defeat and M and I grabbed a couple of bags of corn and went out in the pasture. We found where the deer had been coming on the property and crossing and put a feed line of corn across the pasture and over to the feeders.
Sitting in the stand that day we saw a small group of deer, and low and behold they followed our line of corn and walked around and even came close to the stand. We were quite excited that our idea worked and maybe we had something going for us. No bucks ever showed up though.
that night though, it rained, and rained a lot. 6 inches of rain came through.
Crazy enough by the next afternoon you could see growth in the feed plot.
that evening we saw more deer that we had all week put together, M and I were ecstatic to say the least. Of course, no Bucks ever showed themselves or else the outcome of this story might have been a little different.
of course, I was beginning to think we would have the worst hunting week of our lives, so seeing as many deer as we saw the last day really cheered us up.
we will get another chance down the road to go again, we will see what happens then.
and for those of you keeping track, we did not see a single Hog the whole time we were there (1 possum, but thats a whole nuther story)
Cherry Pie!
