What do Guns, Biscuits and a 9 year old boy have in common?

We do live in the south so the list of things they have in common is quite long.  But in this case,  it has to do with Nerf Gun, how to build a cabinet and my child.

As you may or may not know, M has a pile of Nerf guns and I like that because I get to load them up and chase he and his friends around the house with them.  (nerf gun wars are very common in our household)

Well the pile of guns was getting out of hand, so we moved the old toy box upstairs that could not hold them, and opened up some space in the living room and we decided we would build a cabinet to store and hold the Nerf Guns and their stuff.  As this was for M I decided we should make it as easy as possible so he can be very involved in making it.

We went to the Blue box and bought some panels of knotty pine to cut down on the gluing and cutting we would have to do

We then laid out each piece and built our cabinet, the hitch?  The whole things is put together with biscuits.  Not a nail in the piece at all.  Only screws are for the piano hinge that holds the lid on.

It was a lot of fun cutting and fitting each piece, putting the biscuit slots in and then moving to the next piece.  We managed to go from start to complete over the weekend.

At one point M said we had used at least one of every kind of clamp I own.

Now it just needs some finish and a clear coat of some kind, and the metal work to hold the top of the guns as they lean against it.  We are going for the more "rustic" feel

Here it is mocked up in the corner it will go in,   (with M's butt up in the air)

  1. The sander has declared it sanded.... I think we have even decided on a stain but we want your opinion before jumping in on that. LOYL
